Boiler repair and servicing in Bournemouth

A boiler that's lost heat or hot water is disruptive at any time of year, and genuinely urgent in winter. Gas work has to be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer by law, so it's worth checking this before anyone touches your boiler.

Any gas work should only be carried out by someone Gas Safe registered — ask Tom to see his Gas Safe ID card when he arrives, which is standard practice and nothing to feel awkward about asking for.

Common faults include loss of pressure, a pilot light or ignition that won't stay lit, strange banging or gurgling noises (often trapped air or limescale build-up), and the boiler cutting out and showing a fault code on the display. Many of these are straightforward to diagnose once an engineer can see the fault code and pressure gauge in person.

An annual service is the cheapest insurance against a mid-winter breakdown. It typically covers a visual inspection, a check of the flue and ventilation, a combustion analysis, and a check that safety devices are working correctly — and it's also usually a requirement to keep most boiler warranties valid.

When to call a plumber

  • No heating, no hot water, or both
  • The boiler is showing a fault code or has locked out
  • You can smell gas — in this case, turn off the gas at the meter and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 first, then arrange a plumber
  • It's been more than a year since your last service
